Reserva Nacional de Paracas, Perú  This is one of the largest protected areas in Peru and deservedly so. Situated along the pacific coast, the rocky, orange shoreline connects the ocean and the desert. The "map" that I was given at the entrance was not even worth having. Looking like a child drew it with crayons on a bar napkin, I was really glad that I had my GPS with me and was able to use it to navigate around this large park. For most of the way there were no roads, bur rather large hills of sand with only small rock road markers keeping the cars away from the cliffs. There were no guardrails or anything else to prevent visitors from driving their cars directly into the ocean (which actually almost happened to me!) A famous part of this reserve is Islas Ballestas, a small group of islands off the coast that is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.
